Sound-Focused Video

Visually-Focused Video

Reflections

I actually chose to make two videos to contrast them and learn more on how I process and focus on things on my walk. Interestingly, after I did my first video focused on sound, I found it much harder to focus on the visual aspects. So much so that as I continued walking and ended up on a patch of dried leaves and acorns I was so enamored with the sound that I ran back to the start of the area to video record and capture that sound while walking (see below if you want to hear it too). I think I also found it harder to focus back on the visual aspects because it can be hard to distinguish differences amongst all the vegetation and it felt less interesting than the sonic aspects of the walk. It is more complicated than I expected to seemlessly meld the two senses or equally focus on them both. I have always loved the interplay and connectedness of multimedia art installations. I've discovered it's much harder to do it intentionally and naturally.

  1. Love the loud crunch beneath your feet as you walk!

  2. What I liked most about the 2 videos was in the first one, the one on which you focused sound, you kept the image still, transfixed on the simple sight allowing the sounds to be more dramatic...in the second video, I liked how you panned the length of the vine...what kind of plant is that???...

  3. Hi Meghan, I enjoyed how you explored both passive and active sounds. It's amazing all of the sounds that surround you even when you feel perfectly still. Listening to your first video, sound of the water and birds still created "visual thoughts" or memories for me even without seeing them whereas the third video creates an expectation and payoff (you step on leaves/acorns and it creates a satisfying sound). I enjoyed your panning of the grape plant, showing the growth backwards starting from its very tip. The sound is still very present (perhaps as much as the first video) though you drew us in with this very specific "path" of the grape.

  4. Hello Meghan, I really enjoyed how you noticed the difficulties of sorting sound and vision and used that as a framework or approach -- I like this idea very much and it is a great solution. I thought both pieces were successful -- the concentration on the sonic in the first was nicely counterbalanced by the soft abstract images of the peak of a roof and the pale blue partial rectangle image in the leaves. I enjoyed that aspect very much. I thought the second piece conveyed visuals so well via your playful camera movement, following the natural shape of the wild grape. The contrast with the iron fence heightened this for me. Great week, great work, thank you!
