About Meghan Walks Creatively

This blog has been created to explore and document creative assignments from a continuing education course from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Fall 2020.

The Course: Walking as Creative Practice

Walking can be an amazingly transformative act. Many cultures have traditions of walking meditations, and throughout history many artists and thinkers have incorporated walking practices critical to their creativity. Since the COVID-19 crisis has greatly limited our ability to travel far from home, what are ways we can bring mindfulness and creativity to the practice of walking? This six-week course will take the form of creative assignments to be made while taking weekly walks. Initial weeks focus on different mindfulness techniques such as drawing attention to sights, sounds, smells and other aspects of your weekly walk explained through written instructions and video tutorials. These mindfulness practices will dovetail into creative assignments in writing, photography, drawing, sound, and video recording which will be added in subsequent weeks to further draw out these experiences. Supplemental digital readings and resources will be provided for further study. Each student in this course will create their own blog. The blog will serve as the means to look at everyone's work as well as a repository for capturing each individual approach to walking as creative practice based on the prompts.
